In June 2018, all Year 1 pupils will sit the National Phonics Screening Check.

Phonics is the teaching of the sounds that make up the English language. At Hermitage we use the programme ‘Read, Write Inc.’ This is a lively teaching programme that teaches children the 44 common sounds in the English language and how to sound blend them for reading (decoding).

Phonics teaching begins in Nursery and continues in Reception and Year 1.  If pupils in Year 2 require further support with phonics then the RWI programme continues as an intervention.
