Special Educational Needs & Disabilities (SEND)

At Hermitage Primary School, we are committed to providing an inclusive, supportive environment in which every child is valued and given the opportunity to thrive.
We recognise that some children may need additional or different support at points during their school life, and we work closely with children, families and other professionals to identify needs and provide appropriate support.

Our SENDCo

Our Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Coordinator (SENDCo) is: Mrs R Langford

Parents and carers are welcome to contact Mrs Langford with any questions or concerns about their child’s learning, development or additional needs, after discussing these with their child’s class teacher in the first instance.

SEND Information Report

Our SEND Information Report explains how Hermitage Primary School identifies and supports children with special educational needs and disabilities. It includes information about the types of needs we can support, the provision available in school, how we support children through transitions and how we review the effectiveness of our support.

What are Special Educational Needs and Disabilities?

A child may have special educational needs if they have a learning difficulty or disability that means they require additional or different educational provision from that generally made for other children of the same age. Children's needs can change over time, and support is planned around each individual child.

The Four Broad Areas of SEND

Communication and Interaction – This may include difficulties with speech, language and communication, or differences in social communication and interaction.
Cognition and Learning – This may include difficulties with learning, memory, literacy, numeracy or processing information.
Social, Emotional and Mental Health – Some children may need additional support with emotional wellbeing, relationships, behaviour, confidence or managing feelings.
Sensory and/or Physical Needs – This may include hearing or visual impairment, sensory processing differences, physical needs or medical needs that affect access to learning.

How We Identify and Support Children

Class teachers continually assess children's learning and progress. If a child is finding an aspect of school difficult, the teacher will consider appropriate classroom strategies and discuss concerns with the SENDCo where necessary. Parents and carers are an important part of this process, and we work in partnership when identifying needs, agreeing support and reviewing progress.

Support may include adaptations to teaching, targeted small-group work, individual interventions, specialist resources, pastoral support or advice from external professionals. Provision is matched to the child's identified needs and reviewed regularly.

Working with Parents and Carers

We value the knowledge that parents and carers have about their children. We encourage families to share concerns early and to work with us in planning and reviewing support. Depending on a child's needs, this may include meetings with the class teacher, SENDCo and other professionals.

Supporting Children Through Transition

We understand that change can be particularly challenging for some children. We plan carefully for transitions into school, between year groups and when children move on to secondary school. Additional transition arrangements can be put in place where they would benefit an individual child.

Accessibility and Inclusion

We aim to ensure that children with SEND can participate fully in school life, including lessons, clubs, visits and wider opportunities. Reasonable adjustments are considered according to individual needs so that barriers to participation can be reduced wherever possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

I am worried about my child. Who should I speak to?
Your child's class teacher is the best first point of contact.
You can also contact the SENDCo, Mrs R Langford, at sendco@hermitageprimary.org.uk.

How will I know if my child is receiving additional support?
School staff will communicate with parents and carers about significant concerns, planned support and progress. The exact arrangements will depend on the child's needs.

Does having SEND mean my child will have an Education, Health and Care Plan?
No. Most children with SEND have their needs met through SEND support provided by the school. An Education, Health and Care needs assessment may be considered when a child has long term significant or complex needs that require provision beyond what is ordinarily available.

How is my child involved?
Children's views are important. Staff seek children's views in ways appropriate to their age, communication and understanding, and use these views when planning and reviewing support.
